Workshopping the Technical Feasibility of a Wearable Health Device

Technical Feasibility Workshop for a Wearable MVP

Alexandra E., founder of a health startup in the stealth stage, is working on a wearable device that will provide new insights into chronic conditions and mental health. Although she had a clear vision, she and her team lacked a structured, risk-aware approach to hardware, firmware and system design.

In order to progress from idea to execution, Alexandra approached us to conduct a targeted technical feasibility workshop. The aim was to define realistic minimum viable product (MVP) scenarios, evaluate available hardware options and determine what data processing would be possible, all without wasting time on assumptions or guesswork.

Challenge

  • No tech team to assess wearable feasibility
  • Unclear sensor setup for medical use
  • Risk of early hardware/data mistakes

Solution

  • Feasibility Workshop tailored to their vision
  • Assessed 3 hardware and data options
  • Defined MVP scope and next steps

Outcome

  • Technical clarity on viable system architecture setup
  • Identified key constraints and options, opportunities
  • Informed decision-making for their MVP development

A Workshop for a Wearables Technical Feasibility

To inform product decisions, Alexandra E. joined us for a Technical Feasibility Workshop. The idea centred on medical-grade activity monitoring using a wearable device. However, she lacked the support needed to evaluate sensor setups, system design and feasibility.

We ran a Technical Feasibility Workshop tailored to these needs. Together, we reviewed three potential system architectures, paying particular attention to data accuracy, reliability and long-term flexibility. We assessed each option in terms of constraints, trade-offs and implementation effort. The outcome was a robust strategy for developing an MVP.

"Three-step visual layout for a technical feasibility workshop. The steps include defining use cases, mapping sensor architecture, and assessing AI and data readiness, focusing on building wearable technology."

Exploring Sensors, Firmware & Mobile Integration

The workshop covered practical hardware considerations to help the founder understand the possibilities and constraints early. We compared off-the-shelf sensors for movement and vital sign tracking, reviewing the key trade-offs between size, accuracy and energy efficiency.

We outlined how the firmware would need to handle signal acquisition and pre-processing, as well as the requirements for connecting the device to a mobile app. This included power-saving mechanisms, connectivity protocols and synchronisation strategies, providing her with clarity on technical dependencies and development effort.

Regulatory Fit and Wearable Safety Considerations

To support long-term planning, we addressed any early regulatory questions. We clarified which types of wearable systems could be subject to the MDR and the implications this would have for safety classification, documentation and certification.

We outlined the factors affecting regulatory scope, such as the types of data collected, how results are presented and the claimed health benefit. This provided the startup with a basis on which to decide whether the device should be marketed as a wellness tracker or prepared for medical certification.

What does the Client has to say?

„Working with punktum was an unexpectedly great experience for me. They didn’t just react to my input, they actively brought in their own initiatives, honest opinions, and thoughtful challenges, which made the brainstorming sessions especially valuable.

Beyond the great chemistry, their structured approach helped turn a broad wearable concept into something concrete, with clear discussions around use cases, sensor choices, on-device versus cloud processing, and what is realistically feasible.

I wholeheartedly recommend working with punktum to anyone looking for hardware engineers who combine strong technical expertise with openness, honesty, and true collaborative spirit. It was not only helpful, it was genuinely enjoyable and empowering.”

What Comes Next: From Workshop to Development

After attending the Technical Feasibility Workshop, Alexandra E. now has a clearer understanding of what is technically feasible and what is required to build a wearable (MVP) that aligns with her product vision. Now that the key system components have been mapped out and the regulatory options clarified, she can move forward with the technical design and development.

The next steps include defining the hardware specifications, planning the data collection process and preparing the backend architecture for future AI capabilities. After that, the focus will be on development. We are looking forward to provide further support on product design, prototyping and software development as a partner.
